Caprock High School Band

            The Caprock Band strives to achieve the highest musical excellence while teaching its members the fundamental elements of musical performance, style, and execution. The band is a spirit organization geared toward providing entertainment at football games and other school related events. The band is also a performance organization dedicated to sharing our talents and efforts with our school and local community. Students learn marching techniques for UIL competition and a myriad of musical selections that encourage maturation of each student’s abilities while giving students a unique musical experience. Students participate in a number of extra-curricular events, including solo and ensemble competitions and All-Region Band. Students’ duties include learning music selected by the director, practicing demonstrated technique exercises to improve their individual skills, and attending all band functions.

Director Derek Harris

Derek Harris is serving his first year as Director of Bands for Caprock and the Caprock Cluster. He has served as Assistant Director for Caprock one year, and as Director at Portales Junior High in Portales, NM. He has performed with the National Intercollegiate Band in Orlando, FL. He is an alumnus of West Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Degree and studied saxophone with Don Lefevre. While there, he played in the WT Marching Band and Drumline, WT Symphonic and Concert Bands, and was an active part of the Jazz Program. He served as a district and chapter officer for Kappa Kappa Psi, the National Honorary Band Fraternity. He grew up in Clovis, NM, where he was drum major and performed in the NMMEA All-State Band and the All-Southwest Band in 2001 and 2002. His other professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Classroom Teachers Association.
